Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan, the first month of the Hebrew calendar, in accordance with the Hebrew Bible. The Exodus of the Jews from Egypt took place in the spring and so Passover must be celebrated in the spring. In every nineteen years, an extra month is “intercalated” seven times. It is added before the month in which Passover takes place. In Israel, Passover is a seven-day holiday, with the first and last days celebrated as a full festival involving abstention from work, special prayer services, and holiday meals; the intervening days are known as Chol HaMoed ("festival weekdays"). In the Jewish diaspora, the holiday is traditionally celebrated for eight days with the initial and final two days celebrated as full festivals. Jews in the Diaspora probably did this originally because they were uncertain of the date of Passover before the calendar was fixed.
Many Jews observe the positive Torah commandment of eating matzo on the first night of Passover at the Passover Seder, as well as the Torah prohibition against eating or owning Chametz (leavened products such as bread, cake, cookies, beer, whiskey or pasta) for the duration of the holiday.
Passover Seder
The Passover Seder "order", "arrangement" is a Jewish ritual feast held on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover (the 15th day of Hebrew month of Nisan). Outside of Israel, the Seder is held twice, on the first day of Passover (the 15th and 16th days of Nisan). According to the Gregorian calendar, the holiday usually comes out in April. Families gather around the table on the night of Passover to read the Haggadah, the story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Seder customs include drinking of four cups of wine, eating matza and partaking of symbolic foods placed on the Passover Seder Plate. The Seder is a family ritual, although communal Seders are also organized by synagogues, schools and community centers. These Seders are usually open to the general public. With the Haggadah serving as a guide, the Seder is performed in much the same way all over the world.
